6 tips (hacks) to help you get the most out of YouTube.

Here are 6 tips to help you get the most out of YouTube:

1. View high quality Video

If you have a YouTube account sign in and change your preferences to ‘view high quality video’.  As well, some videos will display a “View in high quality” link below the video – click on that to view High Quality videos. A third option is to add ‘&fmt=18‘ to the end of the url (and refresh page with that appended text). If the video was ingested into YouTube as a high quality video then you should see the higher quality format. A final option is to append ‘&fmt=22‘ to the end. This will present an even larger HD version (bandwidth may be an issue with this resolution).

2. Link to a specific time in a Video

If you just want to link to a specific section of a video add ‘#t=01m30s‘ to the end of the YouTube url you are forwarding. In this example the video would play at 1 minute and 30 seconds.

3. Loop a video

If you want to loop a video (use this command sparingly!) you just need to append the url with ‘&loop=1′.

4. Disable ‘related videos’ in the YouTube video player.

If you want to stop people from linking to the default list of related videos that show up at the end of a YouTube video then add in “rel=0” to the end of the url.

5. Autoplay an embedded video

If you want a video to play as soon as someone lands on your page (Caution: this can be annoying, surprising and embarrassing to viewers all the same time) by adding &autoplay=1” just after the url in the embed tag.

6. Avoid country limitations and geofencing

Some videos are banned in certain geographies. To avoid this simply delete the ‘watch?v=‘ in the url and replace it with ‘v/‘ and the video will launch in a separate window instead of the url page. {i.e. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6bk2YjfPTg&fmt=18 becomes http://www.youtube.com/v/N6bk2YjfPTg&fmt=18 } You will lose the High Quality delivery though.
